Doctor Who star opens Walshall UK school playground

HE’S the bungling boyfriend of Amy Pond in Doctor Who.

But Brummie actor Arthur Darvill took time out from his character as Rory Williams to return home to the Midlands and open a play ground made out of scrap.

Arthur, aged 29, from Bournville, previously had a job as a play scheme worker, and reckons the new PlayPod at Whitehall Infant School, in Walsall, is a lot like the Tardis.

He said: “It’s simple-looking from the outside, but a world of magic and wonder within.

“Watching the children playing with all this stuff I wonder how we haven’t thought of it before.

“It’s fantastic to see the kids having so much fun with things that would otherwise be thrown away.”

The facility, the first of its kind in the West Midlands, was installed by charity Children’s Scrapstore, which makes practical use of scrap material for youngsters’ play activities, including tubes, crates, netting, phones and keyboards.

What episode(s) scares you the most? None of them honestly SCARED me, mostly because DW is a show that is pretty far removed from reality. It’s the stuff that could happen that freaks me out, which is why I don’t watch “Criminal Minds” anymore. Anyway, I think “Waters of Mars” creeped me out the most.
Which yarn weight would you prefer, lace weight, fingering weight or sport weight? Fingering, sport, or worsted would get the most love and use. I am a sweater knitter, but i do dabble in socks, hats, and shawls, and ogoodgod, I can NEVER have enough pretty sock yarn. It should also be noted that I am a stripey yarn WHORE.

What kind of item would you like to make with above mentioned yarn? I’m going through a long-cowl/infinity scarf phase! I’d make another Big Herringbone Cowl or something similar. Also as soon as I get more damn 1s, I’ll be making more socks.

What’s your theory about River Song’s identity? I find it really, really hard to believe that River is *just* the future Doctor’s future wife. For Moff, that just seems way too straightforward. I know he’s shot down the “River is future Amy” theory; I find myself wondering if River isn’t the future Doctor him- or herself, somehow. After all, obvs the future Doctor would know his own name. Someone also posited that River is an avatar of the TARDIS, which is a very cool theory— the TARDIS is sentient, so the possibility of it creating a “human” version of itself appeals to me.
What is your favorite Doctor Who related pattern or project someone has made on Ravelry? OGOODGOD, without a DOUBT, my favorite is the Eleventh Doctor Big & Cuddly. DO WAAAAANT. Lookie:

If you could (realistically) get any Doctor Who memorabilia from your spoiler what would it be? Anything, to be honest! I have Ten’s sonic screwdriver nd a couple shirts from TeeFury and shirt.woot, but I’d LOVE DW magazines, posters, stickers, WHATEVER.
Also, yall, don’t forget that when it comes to DW merch, there are LOTS of unofficial things out there that are flat-out awesome: art prints, crafty stuff, whatever. If you search etsy or artfire, you get a bunch of DW-related results! eta like these!! omg yall!

Do you have any jewelry allergies? No, but I’m not a huge jewelry person. I DO have 4 sets of holes in my ears, but I only wear stud- or post-type earrings. I’ve also got a tragus piercing, a navel piercing, and tattoos..not sure how much you can do with that.:)
What kinds of tasty treats/candies do you like? I lurrrrve Twizzlers Pull & Peels. My favorite food is a Jimmy John’s veggie sub.  Food of the carb-loading GODS. Also Giordano’s deep-dish stuffed pizza. However, they don’t ship well…SONOFABITCH. Really, if it’s bad for me, I probably love it.  Seriously. I eat like a five-year-old. I love salty cheesy snackies. Crunchy stuff is good too. Candy-wise, ummm…I love milk chocolate— Cadbury Dairy Milk/Milk Tray, plsthnxbai. Also any other exotic or foreign milk chocolates— I am open-minded when it comes to chocolate. :)
Do you like chocolate? If so, white, milk, or dark? What about fillings/flavorings? MILK MILK MILK. The sweeter, the better. I’m open to fillings as long as they’re not RAISINS or fruits.
Any food allergies? Um, things which are healthy and good for me. :)
Any fiber allergies? Just the thought of mohair and/or angora makes me break out in hives.  I can’t even pet the goats and bunnies. :(
Do you wear jewelry? See above— mostly post earrings.
If so, what kind? I will, however, wear bracelets.I change my navel piercing too.
Would you like spinnable fiber? Or handspun yarn?  Handspun would be squee’d over and patted, if not ever knitted. No spinning fiber for me, please…I don’t spin.
Episodes that make me cry The line “Godspeed, my lonely angel”….that just gets me, man. Other sob-inducing eppies: End of Time I/II, Vincent and the Doctor, and the next-to-last bit of The Pandorica Opens. (Y’all know which part I’m talking about.)
Favourite Doctor: Ten was my first and will always hold a special place in my heart…but Matt Smith as Eleven is so beyond endearing!
Favourite Companion: My favorite is Amy Pond, but I may be a bit biased since I vaguely resemble her (at least in hair color). :D As far as characterization, though, I am 100% Team Martha/Marfa. She’s a BAMF.

If you had to pick one thing as an Icon for the series, what would it be? I’d have to say the TARDIS, because it’s so immediately recognizable, and because it’s the one symbol that’s been around through all the Doctor’s regenerations.
Favorite Episode: “Vincent and the Doctor”, because although it makes me bawl, it’s also a sensitive and realistic portrayal of Vincent’s mental illness and all the accompanying highs and lows.
Favorite villains: ADIPOSE!!!

UK DVD’s okay? I don’t think my dinosaur of a DVD player would play nicely with them. :( But I would love UK Doctor Who books or mags!

What monster/villain/character would you not want to receive? I’m in the minority in that the Weeping Angels don’t creep me out, but the squishy Dalek-insides and Dalek-man hybrid do. Eugh. Also Rassilon. NON-BOND TIMOTHY DALTON FREAKS ME OUUUUUUUUT.
What was your first Who experience? I’m a relative newbie…I just got into the show last spring, and have been spreading the Gospel of Who ever since :)

if you could see a DW episode set in any historical period/event, what would you choose? I’ve always wanted to see the Doctor hanging out in gangster Chicago and with the Rat Pack. :) And CAMELOT! I want Eleventy to go to Camelot!

What are your favorite things about Dr. Who (the actors, the writing, the time-travel, the drama, the comedy…)? “ROMANCE AND INTELLECT OVER BRUTE FORCE AND CYNICISM!” The idea that the universe is just as big and interesting as your childhood self dreamed it was. The hope and faith each Doctor has in the goodness of humanity.
Which is cooler: Bowties, fez’s, or ridiculous scarves? Bowties and the fez.
Do you knit or crochet or spin? I knit pretty much exclusively— I started out crocheting, but it hurt my wrist, so I switched to knitting.

What kinds of items do you like to receive? Everything that’s well made and shows that my spoiler put some thought in it
What kinds of items do you not like to receive? PINK. I’m just not a pink person; nothing personal. Any wildly variegated colorway; I tend to drool over semi-solids way more. Fiber-wise, I cannot have mohair or angora because they make me itch like crazy, and also because why the hell would any sane person WANT to wear a yarn that makes you look puffier?!

Is there anything that must NOT be in your package? Hate overly musky/sugary-sweet scents (i.e., vanilla anything)
Favorite color(s)? green green green. go look at my projects if you don’t believe me. After that, purple, yellow, teal, dark red. VIVID is the key. (As stated above, I am also a whore for self-striping yarn!  I’m very easily amused.)
Favorite fiber(s)? Love me some merino/cashmere blend, my current favorite fiber combo…soft and luxe, but with unexpected strength. Kind of like me….um, I think. :) Also love bfl, merino/alpaca/cashmere, merino/silk and wool/tencel blends.

Anything else your spoiler should know about you and your interests? I don’t use candles/home fragrance— too strong for me. (I love the lavender-vanilla Febreze, tho.) As far as perfume/body care, I like simple florals like gardenia. I’m not really a jewelry person (except for my navel ring…I change that and would love new bling). I adore stitch markers, the bigger and jinglier the better. my etsy faves are here (check my fave stores versus my fave items).

Would you want some cute Doctor Who freebies included in your package (as an extra, not instead of proper items)? yes, everything and anything Doctor Who would be welcome!
